Driving Change Through Tech: How Rubies Technologies Creates Live Changing Impacts in 2024

In a world where technology is the backbone of innovation, Rubies Technologies has taken bold strides in ensuring no one is left behind. Through a series of impactful initiatives in 2024, Rubies Technologies, through its NGO arm, Rubies Ttech Foundation has empowered students, educators, and communities with essential tech skills, proving that technology is not just a tool but a catalyst for change.

In 2024, over 1,000 individuals were impacted through our various initiatives, from training sessions to conferences, we reached and empowered a diverse audience of young tech enthusiasts, educators, and students. Also during the School Tech Tour, over 200 students were trained and equipped with practical coding and tech skills, opening doors to future career opportunities.

The impact didn’t end with students only, educators and teachers were also equip with relevant knowledge to integrate into their classroom to nurture a new generation of innovators during the second edition of the Tech Educators Conference.

Here are the highlights from Our 2024 Initiatives

The Girls Tech Bootcamp (GTB) 2024

The tech industry has long been perceived as a male-dominated space, leaving a significant gender gap that stifles diversity and innovation. In response to this imbalance, Rubies Tech Foundation, the NGO arm of Rubies Technologies, took a bold step in 2024 to change the narrative. The Girls Tech Bootcamp (GTB) 2024 was launched in May, a six-month intensive training program designed to bridge the gap by equipping young girls with in-demand skills in Python programming and robotics.

The GTB 2024 wasn’t just about teaching tech—it was about fostering resilience, determination, and a sense of belonging for young girls in a field where they are often underrepresented. Participants came from diverse backgrounds, including secondary school students, recent school leavers, and undergraduates in their early years of study.

The journey wasn’t an easy one. While 96 girls registered for the program, 26 committed to starting, and only 21 successfully completed the six-month rigorous training. This highlights the program’s intensity and the grit required to succeed in tech. However, those who remained emerged stronger, more knowledgeable, and ready to compete with their male counterparts in the tech industry.

One of the standout achievements of GTB 2024 was its focus on younger participants. As the saying goes, “Catch them young,” and this program did just that by ensuring girls were introduced to tech early, demystifying the field and positioning them as future leaders. Rubies Tech Foundation believes that empowering girls isn’t just about skills—it’s about rewriting the narrative.

The School Tech Tour

The School Tech Tour 2024 was a resounding success, impacting over 200 young minds across three schools in Nigeria. Introducing them to  basic computer knowledge and the Scratch programming language, this initiative aimed at bridging the tech gap among students and igniting their passion for innovation and problem-solving.

The three school visited are UI Staff School, University of Ibadan (Oyo State), Votam Life Gate School, Agbara (Lagos State) and Joyful Learners International School, Sagamu (Ogun State). The School Tech Tour was not just about teaching coding; it was about creating a pathway for young Nigerians to explore opportunities in technology and  to empower more students with tech skills, regardless of their backgrounds

Tech-Up Ota

In August 2024, RubiesTech Foundation, in partnership with Talent Mine Academy, introduced over 50 children aged 5 to 13 from low-income communities in Ota, Ogun State, to programming and robotics. This initiative aimed to spark early interest in technology by providing foundational skills in Scratch programming and hands-on training in robotics.

The Tech-Up Ota program was executed over three days, with activities divided into two major components: Scratch programming and robotics training. Participants were grouped by age, ensuring effective learning for both younger and older students. Each day presented new opportunities for the children to delve deeper into coding and robotics.

At the program’s conclusion, students showcased their projects in Scratch programming and robotics. Outstanding students received prizes, further boosting their enthusiasm for technology and innovation.

Tech-Up Ota marked the third edition of this impactful bootcamp series aimed at introducing children from low-income communities to technology. Previous editions included the Ijoko Project (2022) in Ijoko, Ogun State, to commemorate Rubies Technologies’ 5th anniversary, and Tech-Up Epe (Lagos) and Tech-Up Ogbomoso (Oyo State) in 2023. These programs highlight RubiesTech Foundation’s commitment to bridging the digital divide.

The Brace Conference

In its fifth year, Rubies Tech Foundation hosted the Brace Conference 2024, a virtual conference of young talent in technology. Held on July 20 with the theme “Digital Dreams: Inspire, Create, Achieve,” the event was a platform to empower kids and teenagers to explore their passions for coding and digital skills, inspiring them to shape the future of the tech world.
