From Sparks to Stars: Rubies Technologies Celebrates 8 Years of Empowering Nigeria’s Next Tech Generation

Today,  June 15th, 2025, Rubies Technologies marks its 8th anniversary, eight years of delivering excellence and impacting lives. The theme of this year’s anniversary is “From Sparks to Stars: One Child, Endless Possibilities.” This milestone celebrates the organization’s journey from a single initiative to a transformative force in tech education across Nigeria.

Rubies Technologies becoming a household name today is no fluke. It is the result of consistent effort and determination to empower kids with tech education for global relevance.

Founded in 2017 by Afape Ruth Temiloluwa, Rubies Technologies began with a mission to introduce children, especially in rural areas, to the world of coding. The inaugural training took place in Akure, Ondo State, where 50 primary school students were introduced to programming. This initial effort laid the foundation for what would become a nationwide movement in tech education.

Milestones of Impact

2018–2019: Rubies expanded its reach by visiting multiple schools in Ogbomoso and Ibadan, training over 200 students. Collaborations with organizations like GDG Ogbomoso facilitated events such as Africa Code Week and the first Summer of Code, introducing students to platforms like Scratch.

2020: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a shift to virtual learning. Rubies launched the Brace Conference, a youth-led event, and established the Rubies Code School, offering virtual training in coding and digital skills.

2021: The organization partnered with various groups to provide tech education to girls in Bariga and at the Lagos State Correctional Centre in Idi-Araba, Mushin. School tech tours continued in Oyo and Ogun states, reaching numerous students.

2022: In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Rubies initiated the Ijoko Project, training 151 children in digital literacy and programming. This year also saw the formal registration of the Rubies Tech Foundation, solidifying its commitment to community development.

2023: The Tech Up Project trained over 200 children in Epe, Lagos, and Ogbomoso, with support from the Python Software Foundation. The organization also hosted its first Teachers and Parents Conference, emphasizing the role of educators and guardians in tech education.

2024: Rubies celebrated its 7th anniversary with robust programs and initiatives. Among them was The Girls Tech Bootcamp, a six-month program in Python and Robotics that empowered 25 girls in Lagos State. The event featured scholarships and awards in various categories. Overall, Rubies impacted over 1,000 individuals that year through various initiatives, from training sessions to conferences.

It’s inspiring to know that the dream driven by Ruth has gone global, with kids in the UK and US gaining tech knowledge through the organization.

Beyond being a training ground for kids, Rubies Technologies is also known as a people-focused organization. It takes the growth of its people seriously, offering opportunities for development. This commitment was reflected in several staff and tutor training sessions. Notably, during Rubiesfest, the 3-day end-of-year program in 2024, experts like Joseph Idahosa, Team Lead at Civic Hive, shared insights on leadership that left the team reflective and motivated.

Growth professional Ethel Alagbada also delivered a powerful session on Enhancing Professionalism for a Bright Future, addressing three vital aspects of workplace success: professionalism, workplace ethics, and team building.

What People Are Saying

Afeez Haruna, a tutor, shared: “Rubies Technologies has taught me that in the realistic world of white-collar jobs, families do exist, places of love, honor, and genuine community. One unique thing about the organization is the vibe, sauce, and personality of the team that runs it… it can’t be matched elsewhere.”

Abdulsalam Baruwa, another tutor, said: “Rubies Technologies has transformed my journey as an educator. It has given me the platform to grow, challenge myself, and discover just how rewarding it is to nurture young minds in tech. The supportive environment and high standards continue to push me toward excellence. Rubies is more than a tech school, it’s a community that genuinely cares. The focus on character, creativity, and real growth (for both students and tutors) sets it apart. It feels like family, but with purpose.”

Ajayi Olalekan, a volunteer, noted: “Rubies Technologies is a place that encourages growth and takes the welfare of its people seriously. The work culture is unique, even a newbie can easily adapt.”

The Vision Ahead

With over 4,000 children impacted in its first seven years, Rubies Technologies aims to reach 40,000 in the next seven. The organization’s vision is to nurture young minds and equip them with digital skills to innovate and solve real-world problems.

As Rubies Technologies celebrates this significant milestone, it reaffirms its dedication to transforming the tech landscape in Nigeria, one child at a time
