On May 18, 2024, the Girls Tech Bootcamp officially commenced with a total of 29 students participating in the training.
The Girls Tech Bootcamp is an initiative of Rubies Tech Foundation aimed at training young girls aged 13-19 in technology to bridge the digital divide between boys and girls in the country. Rubies Tech Foundation is a non-governmental organization arm of Rubies Technologies, a tech organization aim at equipping African kids with digital knowledge for global relevance.
According to the founder of the organization, Miss Temiloluwa Afape, looking back at the 6 years since the organization’s establishment, they have seen more boys attending and benefiting from tech programs compared to girls. This inspired the idea of the Girls Tech Bootcamp.
The first 10 participants who arrived early at the venue received t-shirts as gifts, and the winner during a game session won a tote bag.
A total of 29 girls were selected for the program after a pre-selection process, and they will be undergoing the training for the next 6 months.
In other to keep the participants on track, the organization promises to constantly bring tech experts in the field of Python and robotics to speak to them weekly so they can be more motivated.
Among the staff of Rubies Technologies present during the opening program were Miss Adejoke, the training director; Miss Oladeji Gloria, the admin manager; Miss Lawal Adeola, the volunteer manager; and Miss Akinpelu Grace, the creative designer.
The volunteers present included Ayobami (the photographer), Olayinka (the robotics trainer), and Monica (class assistant).
